How to Add an Email Signature in Apple Mail
Apple Mail supports HTML signatures, but the setup process is slightly different from Gmail and Outlook. Here's everything you need to know.
macOS Apple Mail
- Open Mail → Preferences → Signatures
- Select your email account in the left column
- Click "+" to create a new signature
- Give it a name and type placeholder text
- Close Mail completely (Cmd+Q)
- Open Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G and navigate to:
~/Library/Mail/V*/MailData/Signatures/ - Find the .mailsignature file that matches your new signature
- Open it in a text editor, replace the content with your HTML signature
- Save and lock the file (File → Get Info → check "Locked")
- Reopen Mail — your signature should now display correctly
iOS Mail (iPhone/iPad)
- Go to Settings → Mail → Signature
- Select "All Accounts" or a specific account
- Clear the default "Sent from my iPhone" text
- Paste your signature — tap and hold, then select "Paste"
Quick Alternative: Copy Paste Method
For most users, the easiest approach is:
- Use our signature generator to create and copy your signature
- On macOS: Create a new email, paste the signature, then select it → Format → Copy as HTML
- On iOS: Simply paste into the signature settings — iOS preserves basic formatting
Tips for Apple Mail Signatures
- Apple Mail renders signatures with WebKit — most modern CSS works
- For macOS, the file-replacement method gives the best results for HTML signatures
- On iOS, simple signatures with basic formatting work best
- Always test by sending an email to another account
